
It's very common to say things like: "I'll give you a treat if you do your homework!"
"But that's not right, Im not using bribery!
Yes, this definitely sounds like bribery, but technically it's not. Here is the difference. Giving someone a reward for helping YOU, is bribery...Giving someone a reward for helping THEMSELVES, is positive reinforcement.
For example: If you give a cop $50 to not write you a ticket, not getting the ticket helps YOU. If you give a kid a gold star for completing their homework, completing their homework helps THEM. This makes it not true bribery.
"Yeah, well your reward is knowing you did the right thing, that's your reward!"
If your kid is that advanced than definite go with it...but as for the rest of us, we have to use "tricks" until they get to that level of understanding. And it's only a trick because most children can't think ahead far enough to see that completing their homework really is helping them in the long run. Most kids can only see far enough ahead to that gold star waiting for them right after.
