Many kids will resist going to sleep if they don't want to. Some kids will simply complain, others will refuse to even go in the bedroom, and some will throw a tantrum. And even if you do get them to bed, they may get right back out in a few minutes!
Here are some helpful ways to help cure the bedtime blues.
Wake them up early - Focus more on an early wake up time, and your child will naturally be tired at bedtime. (Click here for sleep schedules)
Exercise during day - Burn off that energy!
Have a dedicated sleep space - Having a room all to themselves is ideal, although not always possible. If your children do share a room, no talking after lights out!
Stories - Bedtime stories are great for many reasons, including building reading skills, learning morals, and bonding. (Click here for my best picks!)
Music - Going to sleep by the sound of music is relaxing, and keeps the child "company" during the transition. Yes, soft and soothing is the first choice, but try to use music that the child likes as well. If you can sing to your child, or even with your child, all the better! (Click here for my best picks!)
Nightlight - Nightlights simply help with a normal and natural fear of the dark. (Available in Store!)
Keep the bedroom door fully closed - Even a slightly opened door can be an excuse to avoid going to sleep.
Water - Bedtime seems to turn every child into a dehydrated camel! The glass of water may not be so much about thirst, as much as a symbol of caring and nurturing before you leave them for the night.
Teddy bears - Any stuffed animal or favorite toy can act as a "transitional object." (Available in Store!)
No Phones, Media, TV, or electronic devices after lights out. I know this is tough but its very important. (Click here for a full description of this topic.)
Kiss goodnight - The simple kiss goodnight holds great significance.
Once you have determined the right sleep schedule, the bedtime and wake up time should be consistent. You can choose which bedtime routine that you like, but have a routine. Not only will it help get them to bed, and keep them in bed, children will remember this ritual with fondness their whole lives!
